Images of Catalina on the move

As we reported on 23 August 2020, Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina, serial 16-212, owned by the “Nationaal Militair Museum” (NMM, National Military Museum) at Soesterberg (the Netherlands), moved to a new shelter. The amphibian was trucked to “Nationaal Transport Museum” (NTM) in Nieuw Vennep on 27 August 2020. Unfortunately Scramble Magazine was not present during the transportation of the Catalina, but thanks to the “Stichting Neptune Association” and their photographers we can show it to you. Thanks guys!

In the coming four years the restoration of this PBY will take place in the NTM as long as sufficient space is available there. On arrival in Nieuw Vennep, the Catalina fuselage had to be tilted somewhat to allow access to the museum building.

Volunteers of the “Stichting Neptune Association” will soon start the restoration of the Cat. The first step to take will be the removal of the covering of the control surfaces and the wing trailing edges. After thorough cleaning an inspection can take place, followed by necessary repairs. The wing trailing edges and control surfaces will then be reskinned, doped and painted. Next step will be the assembly of the nose turret, and making it rotatable again. The installation of a .50 gun in the nose turret is being considered as well. The amphibian's blisters will be repaired and at least one will be made operational to be opened. A second .50 gun will be installed in this blister.

Before placing the Catalina on display at the NTM, the external appearance of both engines will be a point of interest. Optional work (but not decided yet) will be the restoration of one of the floats (to make it operationally retractable) and the repairs of the blinds in the nose window.

Warbird Digest has just received the August, 2020 report from Chuck Cravens concerning the restoration of the Dakota Territory Air Museum’s P-47D Thunderbolt 42-27609 at AirCorps Aviation in Bemidji, Minnesota. We thought our readers would be very interested to see how the project has progressed since our last article on this important project.

New French Yak-9 airborne

Two week back, a new French Yakovlev Yak-9 fighter made its first post restoration flight at La Ferté-Alais, the aerodrome of Cerny. The first flight was made as F-WZOS, but the aircraft will be registered in the historic category as F-AZOS.

The owner of the machine is Jean-Marie Delimboeuf, who acquired it in January 2006. His Yak is painted as Soviet Air Force “6 White”, in the colours of the famous Normandie-Niemen squadron.

F-AZOS was once laid down as a Let C11 trainer (construction number 172612) and flown by the Egyptian Air Force until 1970. The Yak-9 is one of a large batch of this type of aircraft which was acquired by Alain Chapel and Jean Salis of La Ferté-Alais, France in 1985. They sold the trainer to the USA in 1988, where it was rebuilt as a single-seat fighter, registered N9YK, with the colours of Soviet Air Force “11 Red”. It had several owners, until it was bought by Jean-Marie Garric of Harlingen (TX) in 2000. He replaced the original round engine by an Allison in-line and sold the machine to France in 2003.

Sold: 1944 Grumman G21A "Super Goose" has been sold and is on its way to a new owner on the East Coast. This is the last plane from the legendary Connie Edwards collection to be sold. It has been a privilege and an honor to sell the collection for Connie and more recently his estate. We're glad that so many of the planes are being seen at airshows and events across the world.
