This cockpit section’s more recent claim to fame involves its featuring in an extensive Vietnam War flashback scene with the actor, Tom Hanks in the 2016 motion picture, Sully.

Meier Motors did it again

The latest restoration by Meier Motors of Bremgarten (Germany), Hawker Sea Fury FB11 D-CRZY, made its first flight on 21 September 2020. We reported earlier on its arrival with Meier Motors *).

The fighter, painted as Royal Australian Navy coded 308/K is destined for Stefano Landi, a well experienced and well know Italian aerobatic- and warbird pilot.

The Sea Fury was allegedly built as WJ298, and then exported to Iraq in 1952, where it flew as 303. The aircraft was salvaged from that country by Ed Jurist in 1979 and registered N26SF. He then sold the machine to the famous Guido Zuccoli. As VH-HFG the fighter flew for the Zuccoli family from 1983 to 2006, painted in Royal Australian Navy colours as 308/K. It was sold to Walter C. Bowe in Sonoma (CA) as N97SF in 2007.

Nowadays there are reasons to believe that D-CRZY is only partly WJ298. It is said to have been exported to Iraq in 1952, but...; Quoting the famous Geoff Goodall, the original WJ298 was still operational with Royal Navy No.776 FRU based at Hurn (UK) in September 1958! Iraqi AF 303 was originally quoted as construction number 37522, but paperwork also indicates it is 37727, which makes it the aircraft later flying as N48SF.

It seems likely that D-CRZY is a composite airframe, with its centre section coming from WJ298 and the tail section of former Iraqi 308.

Namibian DC-6B destined for the USA

James Mac Ivor from San Antonio (TX) is determined to save a Douglas DC-6B. A very special DC-6B, namely the last aircraft of this type ever built, with construction number 45564, V5-NCG.

This propliner has been stored since 2010, but a new future is now imminent. James Mac Ivor, owner of Nighthawk Air Systems Inc. is especially interested in the Namibian machine, as it is one of the few DC-6s still in their original passenger configuration. The airplane is low time since it was the last DC-6 off the Douglas line in Santa Monica (CA) and mainly used in presidential service. It accumulated only 10,000 hours total time. In the past three years, the new owner has gathered four zero-time engines, which will be assembled when the time is ripe.

V5-NCG has an interesting history; it was delivered to Yugoslav airline JAT as YU-AFB in 1958 and in 1966 the aircraft passed on to the Yugoslav Air Force as 7452, and was later reregistered as 73102. As such it was the presidential aircraft of President Tito. In 1970 it was shortly used by Adria as YU-AFB again, but was then returned to the Yugoslav Air Force.
In 1975 the DC-6B was donated to Zambia, where it flew as GMB 112, the presidential aircraft of President Kaunda. In 1992 the propliner was sold to Namibia Commercial Aviation and registered as V5-NCG.

And –nice to know- the sister ship, the second-to-the-last built DC-6B, is the one that was sold to Red Bull. It now flies as OE-LDM.

Another Sea King returns to life

On 1 October 2020, Historic Helicopters based at Chard (UK) revealed that yet another one of the Westland Sea Kings in their collection made its first successful post restoration flight from their home base.

The Sea King is former Royal Navy HC4 Commando ZA314 with construction number WA918. It received its civilian registration G-CMDO on 17 June 2019. After thorough restoration, the British CAA released a Permit to Test on 13 August 2020. ZA314 still carries its dark green Royal Navy livery with code WT.

The Sea King provided a wide range of services in the Royal Navy, including wartime roles in the Falklands War, the Gulf War, the Balkan conflict, the Iraq War and the Afghanistan War. The Sea King is also well known in its capacity as a Royal Navy Search and Rescue aircraft.

The Sea King HC4 was used as a commando assault and utility transport version for the Royal Navy. The simplified undercarriage was capable of transporting 28 fully equipped troops. ZA314 was one of 42 Sea King HC4s built and saw her first flight in 1982. It was subsequently flown by 846, 845 and 848 Naval Air Squadron (NAS). After decommissioning, ZA314 was acquired by Andrew Whitehouse, the owner/founder of Historic Helicopters.
