70 years ago today, Strike Fighter Squadron 143 (VFA-143), also known as the "Pukin' Dogs" was established. The squadron started out as VF-871, flying F4U Corsairs. In February of 1953, the squadron was redesignated VF-123 and switched to the F9F-2 Panther. Three years later, they were redesignated VF-53, transitioning to the F3H Demon. Then in June of 1962, the unit would be redesignated VF-143 flying F-4 Phantom IIs from that point until 1974 when they transitioned to the F-14 Tomcat. The Tomcat would be with the Pukin' Dogs until 2005 when they switched to the squadron's current aircraft, the F/A-18E Super Hornet and was designated as VFA-143.
