Snowbird Crash in Atlanta

Post by RyanS » Sun Oct 13, 2019 5:37 pm

Hearing reports of a Snowbird crash in Atlanta. Sounds like they were setting up for their show when something happened. #5 ejected and is reportedly safe. Please post any other info here

Sounds like the rest of the show has been canceled. The aircraft went down in a field so no damage on the ground.

Pure speculation on my part, but the Tutor is a single engine. A lost engine would give time to aim the plane and eject vs something like a control failure that might happen too quickly to get out. Of course it could be luck that it ended up in the field.

For those unaware, Snowbird 5 is married to Snowbird 2 so she was right there when it happened. I'm sure this is a nightmare scenario for both. She is super nice - stopped me to say hi when I flew with the team last year and has an awesome backstory.

Very, very relieved to hear things worked out ok, at least as far as we know.

FAA statement gives the wrong designation for the Tutor!

Glad to hear nobody was injured.

A friend's daughter was the tech for Number 5 a couple of years ago. She'll be quite concerned about this and for the record it's the Royal Canadian Air Force and my father served a full career with it retiring in 1968. Around that time it became the Canadian Armed Forces which finally was changed back to the original RCAF designation around 2011

If you haven't already heard the Snowbirds CT-114 aircraft have been temporarily grounded (as is expected):
