US Navy Tactical Demos and Legacy Flights in 2020

Post by RyanS » Thu Dec 12, 2019 12:36 am

Passing on some info gleaned from ICAS - the Navy does plan to support Super Hornet demos next year, along with a 'limited profile' F-35C demo and Legacy Flights!

A small but possibly telling change; the US Navy TacDemo Facebook page just rebranded as the Rhino Demo Team. Possibly wanting to be more specific if the F-35C Deno Team will be making their own page? They also posted a photo of 2020 practice in the Super Hornet.

It might very well be possible. I hadn’t thought about it at first. Too bad they don’t sell merchandise because this new design is 🔥

I agree it's a good design. I tend to like things that show an actual aircraft instead of a symbol or whatever. They have sold some merch in the past, I have a TacDemo shirt at home. It's a less formal program than the USAF teams though so who knows what'll happen.

I know the very limited participation of Navy single-ship demos has been a disappointment to many the last couple of show seasons. It's a bit of a long read but the link attached is worthwhile for anybody who wants to see the reasons there was such a lack of available aircraft in the RAG squadrons to field demonstration crews. It looks as if the measures taken to get more broken jets fixed faster and back into the fleet have been yielding good results.

They have actually already been practicing for a several weeks. I was down in Va Beach a couple of weeks ago and witnessed a Rhino practice demo from Oceana Blvd. I talked to a local and he said they have been flying practice demos since the first week in January.

Good to see they are hitting it hard early this year. The amount of communication from the demo team on the Facebook page is also encouraging for the season. Here's to hoping that we see a full demo schedule this year this at least somewhat resembles the good old days where they hit more than a handful of shows.

So is it confirmed that 106 is the only squadron doing demo's and 122 is doing Legacy Flights? Would suck for the west coast fans

Sure it's a demo team and they go all over the country, but the chances of 122 showing up in the west is much higher than 106 making the trek over.

Yes, they confirmed it a few hours ago. VFA-106 will do the demos while VFA-122 will only do Legacy Flights.

Can't say that it would suck to have Legacy flights. Saw two shows do it with T-45s and two with Growlers last year, there were some really unique formations that I've never seen the standard Tacdemos do and still some great high speed passes and such.
