https://www.facebook.com/CommemorativeA ... &__tn__=-RHow about a little love for our fans down under today, for it was #OTD in 1950 that P-51 Mustangs of No. 77 Squadron RAAF were sent to Korea as part of Australia's contribution to the war. Pictured here is Wing Commander Lou Spence prior to a mission over Korea in August 1950.
No. 77 Squadron had been part of the Japanese occupation force after WWII, and was just preparing to return to Australia when the Korean War broke out. No. 77 Squadron was committed to action over Korea as part of the UN forces, and flew its first ground attack sorties on July 2, 1950, making it the first UN unit to see action.
They were withdrawn to Japan in April 1951 to transition to the Gloster Meteor and returned with the jet aircraft in July. Though the Meteors met with greater success against MiG-15s, the MiGs were still superior, and following heavy losses, No. 77 Squadron was shifted to a ground attack role from December 1951 until the end of the war. They remained in South Korea on garrison duties until returning to Australia in November 1954.
