French Air Force Rafale Tactical Displays 2021

Post by Adam » Sat Oct 17, 2020 12:23 pm

There's recently been some clarity on the French Air & Space Force's plan for the Rafale Tactical Demonstration teams in 2021. The Rafale Tactical Display was set up in 2019 to replace Couteau Delta, with displays coming from 30 Squadron at Mont-de-Marsan under the name Rogues Victor. 4 Squadron at Saint Dizier were due to field their own team for the Rafale Tactical Display in 2020 under the name Requin Mike.

The plan for the Rafale Tactical Display in 2021 is that both units will field displays. 4 Squadron will still fly two Rafale Cs under the name Requin Mike (the name paying tribute to St. Dizier's former Raffin Mike tactical demonstration team) and 30 Squadron will operate two Rafale Bs under the name Bravo Vautour, with that name commemorating the Sud Aviation Vautour. Both teams validated in July 2020 and will perform alongside other French Air Force teams, including the Rafale C solo display, in 2021. The Rafale Tactical Display will be provided by either Requin Mike or Bravo Vautour, depending on the availability of each squadron at the time of any given airshow, in a style similar to the French Navy's Rafale M solo displays, which can come from either 11F or 12F.

Here's some info about the new display teams.
If one team wasn't enough how about 2 new teams from the French Air and Space Force for the 2021 airshow season!?

Let's welcome the “Mike Requins(Shark Mine)” tactical demonstration team from Saint-Dizier airbase! The team will include 2 pilots Captain Christian and Captain Julien as well as 2 navigators Captain Rémi and Aspirant Kévin and will fly on 2 double seat Dassault Rafale jets in heavy configuration

The display will last for about 15-minutes during which they will perform a series of tactical maneuvers simulating air to ground attacks as well as the raw power and agility of the Rafale even when fully loaded!
Something to look forward to in those weird times!

French Air and Space Force created a new tactical demonstration team "Bravo Vulture"!

The team consisting of 2 pilots Captain Julien and Captain Jean-Philippe and 2 Dassault Rafale twin-engine, canard delta wing, multirole fighter jets from the 30th Fighter Squadron in Mont-de-Marsan Air Base. The team is a continuation of the “Ramex Delta”, “Couteaux Delta” as well as the "Rogues Victor" Tactical display teams.

The display will last around 10-minutes and the pilots will demonstrate the operational capabilities of their aircraft such as the “Show of force” during which the aircraft dives towards the ground to intimidate the enemy, the simulations of attacks with cannon and bomb passes as well as the extraordinary power and agility of the rafale!

The team was hoping to have its debut display this year but due to the COVID pandemic, this has been shifted to 2021.

Remember this isn't really a "new" act - it all falls under the Rafale Tactical Display umbrella, so it's mainly a continuation of a 2019 display but with a few tweaks and new names. Aside from the model of Rafale they fly, the defunct Rogues Victor, along with the "new" Bravo Vautour and Requin Mike, will all be fairly hard to distinguish from a spectators' point of view and won't ever appear back-to-back at the same show.

What's perhaps more interesting is that the French Air Force think there will be sufficient demand for the Rafale Tactical Display to have two units fieling it in parallel, as they planned on doing pre-pandemic in 2020. It's the first time ever that the French have fielded two units as part of the same tactical display team (Having said that, the French Navy do the same with the Rafale M Tactical Display and they only attended two shows per unit back in 2018, so maybe I'm getting ahead of myself...).

There's a small taste of Bravo Vautour here, but flmed from off-base and not terribly well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9dn6HOm5OE

And here's a rather better look at the defunct Rogues Victor performing in Finland in 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeuq303Q3_s

Much as is to be expected, there are a couple of airshow-type moves but it's mainly with a tactical focus: an intercept, show of force and simulated air-to-ground runs. Very high-quality, as always, from the French, but not looking to be quite on the same level as Couteau Delta/Ramex Delta.

The new French Air and Space Force Demonstration team the Requin Mike that was due to debut at the European airshows in 2020 will be back in 2021!

It was announced today that the team will begin its training flights in the next few days with the first training flight planned for Monday, April 12, 2021, at Air Base 113. A total of five to six training flights will be conducted on weekdays from April 12 to 23.

Mike Requins is a tactical demonstration team from Saint-Dizier Air Base flying two Dassault Rafale B French twin-engine, canard delta wing, multirole fighter jets. The team will include 2 pilots Captain Christian and Captain Julien as well as 2 navigators Captain Rémi and Aspirant Kévin and will fly on 2 double seat Dassault Rafale jets in heavy configuration.

The display will last for about 15-minutes during which the team will demonstrate all the types of missions carried out on a daily basis by the crews of Air Base 113 and will include simulated air to ground attacks and simulated air-to-air combat. The team will also showcase the raw power and agility of the Rafale even when fully loaded.

The 2021 schedule is not yet known.
