https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_ ... %2As%2As-R#OTD in 1943, 97 aircraft from USS Saratoga (CV-3) and USS Princeton (CVL-23) conducted a strike on Simpson Harbor, Rabaul, damaging the heavy cruisers Atago, Maya, Mogami, and Takao, the light cruisers Agano and Noshiro, and a destroyer for the loss of 10 aircraft. The Japanese would never again risk heavy ships in the Soloman Islands.

75 years ago today:
https://www.facebook.com/CommemorativeA ... &__tn__=-RWe've talked about it on the page before, but the arguably worst-named-fighter ever, the Ryan Fireball, made the first carrier landing under jet power #OTD in 1945 after its piston engine failed. The Ryan FR-1 was a mixed-propulsion fighter with a traditional radial engine in the nose, and a jet in the tail. The landing was made by USMC pilot J. C. West aboard the USS Wake Island (CVE-65). Would you have guessed the first jet carrier landing was that early?
