Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2018

Post by RyanS » Mon Oct 23, 2017 12:30 am

Someone passed along this post which says the F-35B, the same version purchased by the UK to use their new carriers, will be performing a flying demonstration at RIAT 2018: https://airshowinfo.hu/airshowfeed/2017 ... riat-2018/
The 2018 Air Tattoo will be a different event to that which you know – as we come together to celebrate one hundred years of the Royal Air Force! RAF100 at the Air Tattoo, a special one off event, will include a flying display from the world famous Red Arrows and the RAFs newest F-35B Lightning! Friday will be a day not to miss in 2018. This special, full show day, will include a mass RAF flypast, a Royal Review of aircraft plus a lot more!

And so the first Thursday midday update is posted.

Swiss PC-7 Team (x9 PC-7)
Swiss F-18C Hornet

Both flying.

This conveniently comes one day after confirming my campsite pitch on the legendary Totterdown Hill.

Hey Adam, we were looking at camping there too, would you recommend it over some of the other ones nearby??

I can't comment, really, as it's my first time there. It's famous for the view and location, I'm not sure how the facilities compare to other campsites. I'm afraid it sold out in a matter of hours though, so you'll have to look elsewhere now. Townsend is, apparently, a good bet, and reasonably-priced as well, so maybe take a look at that? Their website is https://www.fairfordairshowcamping.net/

I'll post here what the Totterdown experience was like after the show and maybe you can try it out in 2019.

Thanks Adam, we ended up booking Townsend, seems to have good reviews and it’s nice and close to the airport too. :)

Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron have self-confirmed their Vampire T.55 and FB.52 for the RIAT flying display. Both will be temporarily painted in RAF markings for RAF100. Not sure if this will be a full display or involvement in some kind of RAF100 flypast or set piece. Personally I'd prefer the latter.

Update 18/1/18 - this is now officially confirmed by DBH.

Not sure how to feel about that. GWDT are great at smaller venues, but I think they'll be rather poor on such a long, straight crowdline. I'm also a tad concerned that we've seen two civilian displays confirmed (and presumably more to come - we seem to be working through the various eras of the RAF) on a year when we're also expecting a bumper lineup of foreign military acts. But I'm sure DBH know what they're doing.
