2018 NAS Oceana Sept 22 & 23

Post by Sam » Sat Jul 28, 2018 10:03 pm

Hi,

I'm new to these forums.

The FAQ for this airshow says "The only photo restriction in place is that no photography is allowed into or inside any aircraft hangar. "
But the following link https://www.oceanaairshow.com/modules/m ... 2aeb4949f7 states that maximum lens is 200mm unless you are approved for a Jet Fan Pass.

Have you guys seen this restriction in previous years at this show?

Is the 200mm lens restriction strictly enforced?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Unfortunately the issue you bring up is quite real - just as recently as 2017 base MAs were telling photographers to return large lenses to their vehicles. Enforcement varied widely from gate to gate (as several photographers told me inside the show) and my solution was to cheat and whip out my CAC to put any discussion to bed immediately. Hope this helps but I was honestly shocked last year to see such silliness aboard Oceana.. My suggestion would be to contact the base PAO sooner vs later and ask for clarification.

That's some silly BS right there...… So I have to sign up just to take some pictures with a long lens.... I am not sure I could even get down there to pick up the passes on Friday if I got one... 4 1/2 hour drive thought DC and Baltimore traffic in the morning...

I am going from Seattle so I have no way of picking them up. I hope maybe they would be accommodating for people in our scenarios.

I'm in a similar boat. Made travel plans months ago and won't be arriving until Friday night. I sent them an email asking if we could pick up the passes Saturday morning if we needed, but of course I have yet to receive a response (not getting my hopes up).

Well this certainly makes a mess of my traveling plans to the show from New York. I wasn't able to make the show last year after 5+ years of going so this is a bit of a surprise for me.

I have no issues with applying for a pass but the problem is that you can only pick it up in person on Friday morning. It's too bad they can't setup a Will Call tent or pick up area for Saturday and Sunday.

I can see a huge mess happening for those photographers that are not aware of this pass.

I'm going to send an email to the organizer to see if they can be more flexible with the delivery of the pass...

Here is an update I received on the NAS Oceana Air Show Facebook page where there is quite an animated discussion going on about this as well.

"The Jet Fan Pass allows you in for all three days. There will be an additional secondary time to pick up your Jet Fan Pass during the Saturday show, 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at Pass and ID."

Take it for what it's worth. With this information I will apply for a Jet Pass and keep my travel plans.

I am glad they made that changed. This will makes it alot easier to get now, I submit my registration today. It would be nice if more military airshow are going to do this kind of thing that they set up some universal pass that can be applied for once and be good at any show.

Adding the graphic for direct reference here.

Thanks for checking on the pick up and sharing here, Pete!

It's unfortunate that the show is taking such an issue with photographers, but at least they are being up front with their plans and giving people a chance to settle things in advance. There have been plenty of horror stories of arbitrary rules made up on the spot at military base shows (including Oceana) in the last few years.

Oceana is the latest in a slew of shows that have tried to enact this policy. I understand it's their show and they can make whatever rules they want, but I wish they'd explain WHY. Of all the shows that have done this not ONE has been able to put forth a reason.

Has there been a direct threat using camera equipment? Have there been injuries from people getting hit in the head by long lenses? It just seems to random and unnecessary...and in the long run sours the experience for the people most likely to spend money on extras, attend the full weekend, etc.
