Edwards AFB and Lancaster to Alternate Airshows Over Next Four Years

Post by RyanS » Sun Oct 21, 2018 8:36 pm

Organizers of the Los Angeles County Airshow are working with Edwards AFB on a deal to organize a show on the base and at Fox Field (current home of the show in Lancaster, CA) for the next four years, alternating locations each year. Edwards hasn't had a show since 2009.

This also means the show will move from March to October.

Air shows are returning to Edwards Air Force Base, as its leadership is partnering with the five-year-old Los Angeles County Air Show to offer world-class events that will alternate sites between the storied base and Gen. William J. Fox Field in Lancaster, the show’s home since 2014.

Officials with the 412th Test Wing at Edwards and Los Angeles County Air Show, Inc. announced they are working on an agreement for a formal four-year partnership to conduct the air shows, which paves the way for a return of the popular events to the base where they have been absent since 2009
The partnership brings a change in the show’s time frame, as well, shifting from March to October, when the Valley’s weather is more conducive to the outdoor event. October was also traditionally the time frame for the Edwards’ air shows, which typically commemorated the Oct. 14, 1947 sound-barrier-busting flight of the X-1 over the base.

Officials have outlined a schedule for the next four years of shows. The 2019 edition is set for Oct. 18 to 20 at Fox Field.

In 2020, the air show will move to Edwards, from Oct. 16 to 18, then back to Fox Field from Oct. 15 to 17, 2021.

The 2022 edition is scheduled for Oct. 14 to 16 at Edwards.
Hopefully I can get to one of the shows at Edwards!

Great news! I've been hoping Edwards would get back to having a show. Now the wait begins...

Very late the party here, but this is cool. The organizers of the LA County Air Show have done a fantastic job; I've never seen such a well-run event, never mind one that was brand new, with volunteer staff that actually knew what they were doing. But with Edwards (*gestures*) right over there, there was always the thought of 'what if'. I was at the last Edwards show (2011? 2012?) and it was really cool being at the bottom of some of the most famous skies in the world.

Anyway, as an Angeleno it's good to have this event in the rotation, wherever it is held.

This big announcement was missed, but the 2019 airshow at Fox Field in Lancaster is delayed until March 2020, which will have the Blue Angels. So in 2020, there will be 2 airshows in the Lancaster area, with Edwards occurring October with the Thunderbirds. After 2020, the shows will rotate between Fox Field and Edwards AFB. There will be a STEM event at the Antelope Valley Fair on August 16-25.

Pretty interesting to see 2 major airshow events with both US jet teams in a 7 month span.

Here is a link to the announcement:
