Ryan has some good thoughts, but I'll add a couple. The Brown lot is not something that I'd quite say "avoid at all costs" about, entry to the grounds there is through the EAA museum which is definitely worth taking the time to tour in its own right. Yes you do have to take a shuttle bus, but they are very quick and efficient at Oshkosh, much better than most other air shows or AFB open houses or whatever that use them. I also like to sit somewhat to show right like he is talking about, but don't discount the idea of also being pretty far to the left. That is where the warbirds and most modern military stuff either launch from or come to the active runway from, and offers some opportunities to see things that you can't from the rest of the flight line.

I'll chime in on seating. We usually sit a little North (left) of Boeing Plaza and have a pretty good experience. The best part of being down there is you don't have anything blocking your views of aircraft taking off North to South, and that's what most of the military and warbird aircraft have done since I started attending five years ago. The catch is that if you're too far North, the warbird flights will turn well before they reach you, so you'll be shooting pics of the undersides of the aircraft (they are not allowed to cross the end of runway 18 during airshow flights). No matter where you go, it's easy to drop your chair somewhere and wander around.

Setting up anywhere along either of the runways will allow good spotting before the airshow. 18 is more difficult in the morning because you'll be shooting into the sun, but I'd say that generally it's the better runway for spotting. 27 is a long walk (depending on where you've parked), but you'll get a nice mix of aircraft out there too. There's always something interesting landing, taking off or taxying among the hordes of GA aircraft.

I'd also say to check this thread in the morning and again around lunch time because Ryan or another poster will share the Boeing Plaza and airshow schedules for the day. It's very helpful if you want to catch a specific arrival or flight. If you're in the Homebuild area, you can also check the Homebuild HQ for the airshow schedule, which they post around noon.

If you plan on arriving early, Blue lot is a good bet for parking. As Ryan said though, plan on arriving by 8:30 or you'll be parking elsewhere.

Seems like a good bet if you're there all week is to spend a day or two on each side of Boeing Plaza and seeing which one you like more. That's what I'm planning on doing this year.

Having not been to the night show before, do the same seating recommendations still apply?

Re: the night shows, something I'd recommend is to start out on the flight line and then make your way towards the south end of Boeing Plaza during the show. There's always several photographers setting up in that area then to catch fireworks with the aircraft parked there. And then once the wall of fire goes, you can pick up your stuff and beat a hundred thousand people out the gate. We were sitting in our campsite having cold adult beverages within 15 minutes of when I took this shot last time, while everybody else was sitting in line.

The night show tends to be more focused on civilian aerobatic acts so the flying is tighter to show center and there is less to see if you sit further down (except during the early part of the show when the jet demos fly).

As it gets dark, you will see many photographers migrate back to the statics as claybird said. If that interests you, feel free to do the same. Boeing Plaza, vintage, and some of the warbirds can all be interesting targets.

Leaving after a night show can be challenging, but I'd say it's still better than most airshow traffic. If you need to beat the rush, leave during the fireworks (but they are great!)

Thanks guys! I'm not sure if my 5 year old will be awake enough to take with me on Wednesday but she is fine with me setting up the tripod and taking a million pictures. If you see a guy with his daughter and she's got a white Nikon 1 that will be us.

If anyone wants to grab a beer on Thursday or Friday, I'll have a cooler in my truck in Lot M. My volunteer shift is over at noon and I'll probably be thirsty.
