Luke Air Force Base, the place to be

On 21 March 2020, a 2008 Bugatti Veyron will get approval of the Luke AFB (AZ) Air Traffic Control to get on the tarmac of runway 21. The supercar will be accompanied by a F-35A Lightning II of the 56th Fighter Wing. The Veyron and the Lightning will then accelerate to the best of their abilities, trying to prove, once again, who’s fastest, a car or an airplane.

The Lightning II will be piloted by Major Justin “Fuego” Miller. He will have to accelerate to climb speed (400 knots, or 460 mph), pull the plane straight up into the sky, make a high-G turn at 8,000 feet and then head back to the finish line.

At the same time, the Veyron, driven by Craig Jackson of Barrett-Jackson Corp., will race down the runway and then back again to the start line (the organizers do not mention the distance the Bugatti will have to race before heading back). The first machine to be back where it all started will be declared the winner.

You might be thinking that the Lightning II will win the drag race. But before you do that, you must take into account that the stealth fighter is powered by a single Pratt & Whitney F135 with afterburner that develops 43,000 pounds of thrust and can push the plane to speeds of 1,227 mph (1,975 kph), but its take-off roll will start slowly, while the Bugatti will accelerate in just 2,5 seconds to 62mph (100km/u) and will reach 200km/u in 6,7 seconds and 300km/u in 14,6 seconds. The Bugatti - considered as the fastest production car on the market - is equipped with a W16 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged engine with 1,001 horsepower and its top speed (will not be reached in this case, is 257 mph - 402 km/u). Just before the Veyron will reach some 350km/u, the car will decrease its speed and will make a 180° turn to race back to its starting point.

We at Scramble are looking forward to the video and pictures of the event!

Airshow canceled
We have decided to cancel Luke Days 2020 airshow scheduled for March 21-22, 2020 due to growing COVID-19 concerns and to mitigate health risks to attendees.

“We continue to take the health of our Airmen and our community very seriously,” said Brig. Gen. Todd D. Canterbury, 56th Fighter Wing commander. “This decision to cancel was made after multiple meetings and conversations with our local community leaders and military health officials. We’re doing our civic duty to protect our citizens on a local level. We are continually monitoring the situation with COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Health Services and Maricopa County Public Health.”

Base senior leaders are focused on keeping everyone informed with current information and preventive measures as it becomes available from the Department of Defense and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
