Fourth RQ-4D delivered to NATO

On Sunday 26 July 2020, the fourth NATO RQ-4D Global Hawk was delivered to Sigonella (Italy). The aircraft took off from Edwards AFB (CA) at 18:33 hrs LT on 25 July 2020. After a flight of almost 22 hours, the Global Hawk landed safely in Sicily.

The arrival of the fourth Northrop Grumman Global Hawk, just two weeks after the delivery of number three, enhances the capabilities of NATO's Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) Force with greater redundancy and flexibility. According to NATO, one Global Hawk is still to be delivered.

The serial presentation of the RQ-4D is still a bit of a mystery. The latest delivered Global Hawk has serial CSXAV-SA-0017. CSX "style" can also be found in temporary Italian military registrations, AV is most probably Aerial Vehicle, SA most probably Sigonella Air Base and 0017 the individual number. With earlier deliveries, like -0015, the CSX prefix was covered/taped by the letters MT. If somebody is able to elaborate on this serial system please let us know.

Repair and modernisation of Su-25s and Mi-24s of the Georgian Armed Forces

Back in 2016, the then Minister of Defence of the republic of Georgia, Levan Izoria, among other things, proposed to remove from service all Su-25 attack aircraft that were part of the Aviation and Air Defense Brigade of the Georgian Land Forces.

According to Brigadier General Vladimir Chachibaya, appointed head of the General Staff of the sakartvelos sheiaraghebuli dzalebi (Georgian Armed Forces), the final adoption of this decision was explained by extremely low readiness rates (only one of twelve aircraft flying at certain times), no access to components and spares from Russia, as well as an inability to effectively use attack aircraft due to advanced location of Russian air defense systems in the territories of Abkhazia and Samachablo. Georgia would instead concentrate on drones for reconnaissance purposes, as well as for air support. The future Georgian air component would solely be based on UAV/UCAVs and a small fleet of support helicopters.

Surprisingly though, on 24 July 2020, the Ministry of Defence announced the restart of a complete overhaul and modernisation programme of the entire fleet of Su-25 attack aircraft and Mi-24 combat helicopters. All stored - and in some cases dismantled - hardware at Marneuli air base will be transported to the Tbilisi Aircraft Manufacturing (TAM) plant (also known as JSC Tbilaviamsheni), where the repairs and modernisation works willl be executed in cooperation with the Delta state military scientific and technical center of the Georgian Defence Ministry.

The overhaul and upgrade of the Georgian aircraft will be carried out within the framework of the Georgian Defence Forces Development Plan approved by the new Defence Minister Irakli Garibashvili. In parallel with the overhaul and modernisation of aircraft and helicopters, the programme also provides for the training and retraining of personnel, as well as the creation of the appropriate infrastructure to support the aircraft.

According to known data, the Aviation and Air Defence Brigade still has ten Su-25 single seaters and two Su-25UB twin seaters in its inventory, as well as two Mi-24V and three Mi-24P Hinds. A video (*) published by the Ministry of Defence shows disassembly of two Su-25UBs marked 20 blue and 21 blue at Marneuli airport and their subsequent transportation to the TAM enterprise in Tbilisi.[*]

Deliveries of Indian Air Force Rafales started

Today, 27 July 2020, the first batch of five Bharatiya Vayu Sena (Indian Air Force) Dassault Rafales took off from Bordeaux/Merignac (France). The aircraft will make a single stop at Al Dhafra (United Arab Emirates) and are expected to arrive at Ambala Air Force Station (state of Haryana, India) on Wednesday 29 July 2020.

On the first leg on their way to India the aircraft will be refueled by Armée de l'air A330MRTTs. It is reported that Indian Air Force Il-78MKI tanker aircraft will be used for the final leg to India.

With these deliveries Ambala AFS will once more receive an all-new aircraft type since the Jaguar was inducted. Coincidentally, the first Jaguars arrived on the same day of the year more than forty years ago: 27 July 1979. The first squadron to operate the Rafale will be 17 Squadron "Golden Arrows".

It was stated by the Indian Embassy in France that the delivery (in France) of ten aircraft was completed on schedule. Five will stay in France for training missions. According to the delivery schedule, the deliveries of all 36 Rafales - 28 Rafale EH single seaters and 8 Rafale DH dual seaters - are expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

Chad Air Force Su-25 Frogfoot on overhaul in Georgia

In April 2020, this Su-25UB from the Armée de l'Air Tchadienne (AAT, Chad Air Force) was photographed during a test flight from the Tbilisi Aircraft Manufacturing (TAM) plant (also known as JSC Tbilaviamsheni) at Tbilisi/Soganlug (Georgia). According to the information at least two Su-25 Frogfoots and one Mi-24 Hind were on overhaul with TAM.

According to the Scramble Magazine database the AAT has eight active Su-25s in its inventory: six single seaters and two twin seaters. The Frogfoots are operated by the Escadrille d'Appui and are based at N'Djamena/Hassan Djamous (Chad).

Have Glass V also for Spangdahlem F-16

On 30 July 2020, 480th Fighter Squadron's flagship F-16CM, serial 96-0080, returned from overhaul with SABCA at Gosselies (Belgium). It was a surprise to see the aircraft received the Have Glass V paintwork.

The Have Glass V (5th generation) painting is all about RAM (Radar Absorbent Material) and is made of microscopic metal grains degrading the radar signature of the Viper.

Included is a photo of 96-0080 in its previous livery. Looking forward to see more SP Fighting Falcons with the new "colours".

USAF squadrons amidst political turmoil United States versus Germany

In a surprise move on 29 July 2020, the Pentagon stated it will begin winding down US operations at Germany’s Spangdahlem Air Base by pulling out the F-16 Fighting Falcon squadron. Furthermore, they are canceling plans to move special operations MC-130J Commando IIs and MV-22B Ospreys from RAF Mildenhall (UK) to Spangdahlem. Also the plan of moving KC-135R Stratotankers from Mildenhall to Ramstein Air Base seems to be halted.

Having threatened to pull out troops (*) for years now, the feud between the US and Germany now seems to have peaked after years of German Defence austerity measures and controversy over the German nuclear task under NATO flag. Spangdahlem's 480th Fighter Squadron, named the "Warhawks", part of the 52nd Fighter Wing, is now slated to become one of the 31st Fighter Wing units, based at Aviano Air Base (Italy).

It was stated that the US Defense Department will move 11,900 servicemen from American military installations across Germany, including 6,400 whose jobs which would return to the Continental United States (CONUS). What will become of Spangdahlem is still unclear. Meanwhile, two wings that had planned to move to Spangdahlem and Ramstein will now stay put. Both the 100th Air Refueling Wing and the 352nd Special Operations Wing will remain at RAF Mildenhall. In due time, the USAF will not have any fighter jets left in Germany. Ramstein Air Base's situation will be unaffected and will be the largest USAF hub in Germany. A total of 24,000 US military personnel will remain in Germany. Since the end of the Cold War in 1991, many USAF jet fighter bases have been closed and returned to the German Government. Those included Bitburg, Hahn and Zweibrücken. Also, at the beginning of the nineties, Ramstein ceased jet fighter operations as the 86th became a transport (airlift) wing.

Sabena Aerospace awarded Hercules maintenance contract

On 29 July 2020, Sabena Aerospace announced that the company has been awarded a contract to buy nine Belgian Air Force Lockheed C-130H Hercules aircraft including spare parts and support equipment. The award is a result from a recent tender which was recently registered. It ensures continued guaranteed maintenance work for the current fleet of Belgian C-130Hs and allows Sabena Aerospace to expand its Lockheed Hercules maintenance support expertise to existing or future C-130 operators.

The new contract will also help the Belgian Air Force as they can prepare themselves for the introduction of the A400M within 20 Squadron "Sioux Bleu/Blauwe Sioux". The Melsbroek based unit still has seven active C-130Hs in its inventory out of twelve that were initially delivered in 1972. Two aircraft were lost, C-130H CH06 was destroyed during a crash in July 1996 at Eindhoven (the Netherlands), sadly killing 34 people onboard and CH02 was destroyed during a fire in May 2006. This aircraft was replaced by C-130H Hercules CH13 (originally registered as CH14).

Since late 2017, the Belgian Air Force started withdrawing the venerable transporter from use. The last C-130H is intended to be withdrawn by the end of 2021. As a replacement, Belgium ordered seven A400Ms transport aircraft in 2003. The first A400M, serial CT02, was officially presented on 5 May 2020. The first A400M, serial CT01, has been bought by Luxembourg and is also in full Luxembourg Armed Forces markings **). The aircraft will be maintained by the Belgian Air Force and therefore carries the Belgian serial range.

Both A400Ms will be handed over to 20 Squadron at Melsbroek in the coming months.

Russian media is suggesting that Авиакомпания Победа (Pobeda) is seeking legal advice on how to cancel (at least) fifteen of the 20 B737MAX8s it has on order with two leasing companies.

In 2018, Pobeda announced it would lease 20 B737-8s via GECAS (five) and SMBC (fifteen). Originally, deliveries would start in November 2019, but never started due to the grounding of the type.

A few months ago the airline said it still needed the aircraft, but this was before COVID-19.

Ryanair has decided to change the role of Laudamotion to a pure wet-lease carrier providing capacity to Ryanair from bases in Austria, Germany and Spain with their A320s.

To create more flexibility, Ryanair has decided to discontinue with the Austrian AOC of Laudamotion, and, instead, establish a new Lauda Europe in Malta. The airline is already in the process of obtaining its AOC and is expected to start operations in November.
