It looks like we may be seeing another airworthy SB2C Helldiver very soon.

Seeing that Helldiver a few posts back reminded me of seeing this a few years ago. This was taken in 2015 from the bus on the backlot tour at the naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola NAS. I had no idea what it was at the time, but later found that the Navy actually installed floats on a Helldiver as a test, designated XSB2C-2. I don't know that this is that actual aircraft, or if the museum wants to recreate it.

Looking at historical imagery in Google Earth, as least the wings have been there since 2012, and the rest of the pieces appeared in 2013. It was still there in November 2020, but the next image shows a covered area at that location, although I think I see the stack of parts on the east side of the back lot in the 2023 image.

If they're going to do anything with it they aren't in any hurry...

At one time, I had heard it was going to go to another museum for restoration, but that hasn't happened to this point. It's a shame it's sitting outside in the salty air of Pensacola. Can't be good for the airframe.
