Wings Over Wayne 2023
Just got parked. Clouds are LOW. Clearance is 500 ft according to Google. Hope it clears before showtime!
I also need to issue a warning to IGNORE MY PREVIOUS POST and take the Berkeley entrance. For some reason, Oak Forest is backed up and not getting relief. After spending 20 minutes on the hwy in the same spot, I switched to Berkeley and got in and parked in 5 minutes. I even got to park in a lot!

Well, I came with low expectations for this show given the forecast, and I am leaving having seen some of the coolest stuff I have ever seen at air shows.
What happened with the weather is unfortunate, especially considering tomorrow will be much worse. No KC-46 or E-3, and Rob Holland did sort of a low show teaser. He didn't perform his full routine at the end. I was surprised to see him get cut of all people. Additionally, Trevor Rafferty, Third Strike, and Swamp Fox did non-aerobatic routines.
Tora! Tora! Tora! does everything low, so the clouds were not an issue. However, one of the "Zero" T6s landed early with an apparent issue. It was the one dogfighting the "P36" Replica. They did end their show in spectacular fashion with not one, but two walls of fire.
It wasn't until about 11:45 when the clouds lifted and the Vampire began the aerobatics for the day.
By the Raptor demo, the clouds had completely vanished. I didn't think it was possible, but the dense fog and low clouds in the morning created even more vapor than we saw at Langley. The Raptor did a full high show, and the crowd was really into it. I'm glad they got to experience that to the fullest extent possible.
Seeing the Raptor is always awesome, but I got the surprise of the year when it dumped about 20 flares during the power loop and ended its Heritage Flight sequence with a pedal turn with flares. I was gonna wait to do the Raptor video as I've already seen it this year, but now I guess I don't have a choice.
The Tora! Tora! Tora! area opened up for people to sit in, so there was a ton of space up front after that.
The CAD was wilder than I've ever seen it. Seeing flares at all is a blessing, and consistently puts the SJ/SW CAD demo above the rest, but additionally this year there were a ton of sneaks and it was just non-stop action.
The clouds came back around for the Blue Angels demo, forcing them to do a flat show. It was still cool to see due to the aforementioned vapor. However, Blue Angel 6 did something I've never seen them do. During the Dieamond Dirty Flat Pass, instead of overtaking them, he broke hard right over the crowd, something I didn't think they were even allowed to do.
And now, some of my favorite stills I've ever captured. Can't wait to see everyone's full pics.

I wish Oshkosh would allow the F-35 or F-22 (which they will have this year) spit out flares. Does SJ AFB have water near it? Don't the flares disintegrate quickly?awal2049 wrote: ↑Sat May 20, 2023 8:23 pm

The Neuse River runs right by the approach end of runway 08, but I’m not sure how they decide which sites to use flares at. The Combined Arms Demos at SJ and Shaw consistently use them, but I’ve never seen an ACC team use them at either until today.IDF783 wrote: ↑Sat May 20, 2023 11:59 pmI wish Oshkosh would allow the F-35 or F-22 (which they will have this year) spit out flares.
