Join us Dave 8-) , it is epic... The Thursday and Friday arrivals are the highlight, most of the fast movers for static will do their best to beat up the field. Very relaxed atmosphere, easy in, easy out... And the hotels have AC!

Cheers

Hi,

A friend and I are coming up from Toledo and doing the full three-day weekend photo pit and arriving early Thursday…where’s the best spot to watch Thursday and Friday arrivals?

Hey jhtolatc!

If you have the 3 day photo pass you'll have access to the airfield on the Friday at noon. So you'll see the full practice day plus the Friday evening show, "Friday Night Afterburner show". There might be some arrivals on the Friday, but they usually all arrive Thursday or during the Friday evening show.

There are 3 spots for Thursday arrivals (these roads will be closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

1) Robins Hill Road - this area might be dicey as it's off to the side of the road, so law enforcement might boot you. End of RWY 15

2) Creamery Road - is off the main roads and even has an observation park! End of RWY 33

3) Katana Cafe area - this has a side view of arrivals but a fence is obstructs the view. Plus it is right by the Katana Cafe, which is a business. In the past, they haven't kicked anyone out, especially if spotters respect their parking area and don't disrupt business.

The arrivals days can be amazing depending on weather. Last year was amazing, but I rememer there was one year when cloud celings were really low and barely anything did any missed approaches.

I have attatched google maps pins for the 3 spots:

Hope this helps!

fun addition, but bitter sweet as I see these regularly during my day job. I was hoping for Typhoon's or F-35's or something..lol.

Either way, great ramp presence and my daughter will love seeing it!

Ottawa is a regular fuel stop for these on their way out to Alberta. I don't get to work them often, they usually go next door. but still fun to watch!

and knowing my luck, The one that shows up at ASL will be one I have seen already!

When is the best time to see arrivals on Thursday? I know there's no set schedule, just wondering if there's a busy period during the day. I'm thinking of stopping in London on Thursday, then heading to Waukegan on Friday morning.

Thanks for any info.

Definately hard to say. I know it got kicked off at around 10am with the Raptor demo team arriving. It got real busy between 1-4 which included the Thunderbirds arrival and site survey.

I guess it depends on how much time you have lol. I'd say 12-5 is a good bet, with maybe some arrivals sprinkled in before noon (like maybe the Raptor Demo Team)
