Yesterday I was very fortunate to attend the airshow at RAF Cosford while on a layover in Manchester.

I arrived just after the Chinook team was finishing their display. What followed was an incredible collection of WW2 fighters, helicopters and modern day fighters while the sun played hide and seek among the clouds.

The Lancaster went mechanical which I believe means both Lancs aren't flying at the moment but the BBMF flew a pair of Spitfires over from Coningaby for a nice routine. The Mk.II then joined up with the Black Jack Typhoon display for some formation work before the Typhoon beat up the airfield.

The Rafale display has been one of my favourites acts lately but it seemed less aggressive than I before. It was also the first time I had seen the Red Arrows in 21 years and while they were good, it just wasn't the same with only 7 jets.

The day was easily won by the Dream Viper from the Belgian F-16 Solo Display. Newly painted and featuring an incredible routine that included a Negative G Loop, it also had the benefit of blue sky and proper light.

There was lots of rotary action as well. The Belgians brought their beautiful A109 with the werewolf livery, the Wessex looked great in its orange SAR colours and the Historial Helicopters displayed their Lynx AH7 for the first time.

The final aircraft was a 617 F-35B and although the Battle Penguin has become a fairly regular aircraft in North America, the Brits were super excited to see one of theirs perform. It flew two passes, the second was in the STOVL configuration and it even paused midfield in the hover.

The show grounds are huge and had everything from the RAF Midlands Museum collection to reenactment camps to a children's midway. This was the first time Cosford has had a show since 2019 and it was packed!

It was a great day and I'm very fortunate I was able to visit.

The RAF Cosford Air Show was one of the most highly anticipated events on the 2022 display calendar having been cancelled in 2020 and 2021. Now the last major Royal Air Force organised show in the UK, it showcased the modern RAF alongside themes marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the 40th Anniversary of the Falklands Conflict, the 80th Anniversary of the RAF Regiment and Helicopter Search and Rescue operations. Cosford also attracted an exciting array of flying displays from international military partners and civilian operators which included the public flying debut of Historic Helicopters Westland Lynx AH7.
