Not actually related to any airshow, but just prior to the Battle of Britain Airshow I visited Duxford on a typical museum day and, by pure chance, saw a wonderful eight-ship display sequence by six Spitfires, one Hurricane and one Mustang. The aircraft performed some close formation passes, followed by a fantastic tailchase.

It wasn't a rehearsal for any specific performance - rather, a general training/just-for-fun exercise while all the aircraft and pilots were in one place. A great example of the magic of Duxford; even on a non airshow day, absolutely anything can happen.

Dramatic skies and chilly weather at Duxford's final show of the year yesterday. The highlight was the finale, a half hour four-ship display by the P-47, Fury, Bearcat and Corsair. After some four-ship formation passes, the quartet broke down into two pairs, which each performed delightful formation aerobatics.

Another notable participant was Fighter Aviation Engineering's newly-restored Tempest, which made its public debut in the static display. It is the world's only airworthy Tempest and it made its first flight less than a week ago.

The final IWM Duxford Flying Day of 2023 marked the ties between the Cambridgeshire airfield and 19 Squadron, one of the RAF’s most illustrious units. Despite being quite a breezy day, a sell-out crowd enjoyed a very relaxed meander through some early Second World War aviation history in a 90 minute flying display. IWM Duxford held its third flying evening over the August Bank Holiday weekend. It has fast become one of my favourites events of the display season presenting a number of Duxford based aircraft as the sun sets over the Cambridgeshire. This year the flying suffered a little due to unserviceability of some aircraft, but the event still enjoyed its own unique relaxed atmosphere and some stunning light. Mid-September saw IWM Duxford host its second major airshow of the year, the Battle of Britain Airshow. The 2023 edition concentrated on historic aviation with the bulk of displays reflecting aircraft from the First World War through the early part of the Cold War. On top of the iconic massed Spitfire and Hurricane flypast, the flying display was packed with some superb warbird action and a very special signature moment. A full image gallery and review from the second day of the event can be found HERE.

Throughout 2023, Imperial War Museum Duxford has been celebrating 50 Years of airshows at the Cambridgeshire airfield. The ‘Flying Finale’ event fell on Saturday 14th October, 50 years to the day of the very first IWM organised Duxford Air in 1973. Those fifty years have seen the air display circuit change beyond all recognition yet Duxford has remained a keystone venue for UK airshows hosting events and home to some of world’s most important collections of historic aircraft.
