Has anyone on the forum attended a show at Charleston before? Charleston has been on my list of places to visit for a while now, and what better excuse than an air show, but I'm wondering how they manage to work the show at a joint civil/military facility amid what appears to be a fairly busy airline schedule.

I remember when we had the air show at KPIT a couple years ago, and it was a nightmare from an ATC perspective, having to close down the whole airspace for the military demos and some of the bigger civvie teams and incur a host of flight delays (not to mention lots of angry passengers), but we could at least keep the north runway operational during most of the civilian performances. Charleston's intersecting runway layout would prohibit this, so I have to assume that there are fairly sizeable gaps in the show to accommodate commercial traffic.

Been twice. They do take commercial breaks to sequence in commercial aircraft. The breaks don’t take long (about 15 mins every 2 hours or so if I remember correctly?), and I’ve never heard of any complaints from an ATC perspective. Idk how it works for booking flights. I’d like to imagine they coordinate with the airlines to schedule departure/arrival times to coincide with the breaks, but idk if it’s that sophisticated.

Both runways were in use both during the show and during commercial breaks. The show line is aligned with the long C-17 flightline that runs north to south. The Blue Angels aligned their routine with runway 33/15, and I imagine the Thunderbirds will do the same. The Viper Demo and all other acts were aligned with the crowd line.

I have been twice as well. The civil interruptions are not the most intrusive part. The use of dual runways is the difficult part as there is no real show center as some acts follow one and some follow the other. Expect a lot of heat haze as it is almost always humid and there are a lot of obstacles out near the runway including a large fuel tank. It does however usually get a pretty good static spread, and if you get there on the early side it is usually pretty easy to get in. Also, if they do it again, the C-17/C-47 heritage flight is worth it just for that alone.

Got a few for this one in accordance to the 2024 Charleston Airshow website, acts are listed below:

C-17 East Coast Demo Team
C-47 & C-17 Heritage Flight (Maybe list as C-47?)
And it appears on the performers list that there is a very dark picture of either Kevin Coleman or Kirby Chambliss, says TBA. [edit, its definitely Kevin Coleman]
