A P-51D Mustang was nearly lost as a result of an engine failure on takeoff. This is the P-51 "Lou IV" owned by the Mid America Flight Museum in Mount Pleasant, Texas. The pilot performed a miraculous landing on a very short runway, saving the Mustang. Here's a good video from blancolirio explaining the incident and the functionality of the Merlin engine.
