Post by Adambadger88 » Sun Dec 10, 2023 3:39 pm

Paul James McCowan, 77 of Mason passed away on October 28, 2023.

Paul was a proud and dedicated veteran in the United States Army, Special Forces. He was a professional skydiver for over 50 years, making thousands of jumps, but his favorite was the world record he held. For a long time, Paul held the world record for skydiving with the largest American flag, which was an honor to him. Paul performed in hundreds of air shows all over the world and was even a licensed pilot.

He enjoyed classic cars and taking his 1967 Mustang to car shows and sharing his hobby with his son. Paul was quiet, but strong, he had a unique sense of humor, was talented in painting and drawing and was always willing to lend a hand.

Opening Friday's airshow was one jumper who exits from the Cessna 182 jump aircraft and deploys the American flag while the national anthem is played. The jumper is being circled by the four PT-17 Stearmans of the Red Baron Squadron, and as he makes his decent upon Rickenbacker International Airport, a flight of three P-51 Mustangs makes a pass down the show line (behind the flag) to help open up the Friday show. The jumper featured in the video is Paul McCowan, the founder of the E Team Skydivers, based in Ohio.

Paul was one hell of an amazing guy and proud veteran. I had the pleasure to talk to him very briefly at Langley AFB in 2008 after he and the team did a jump; I could tell he was honored and thrilled to jump before the Red Arrows and everyone in the Hampton Roads community.

He was also honored sometime after 2008 or so - I'm having a hard time trying to find a link to it but I do recall reading about it - all because of the jump video you linked from the Gathering of Mustangs & Legends Airshow.
